What is 22Cr?

22Cr is shorthand for a stainless steel based upon a composition of 22% chromium – a duplex stainless steel.

History of 22Cr

The most popular specification is  UNS S32205 (1.4462, F51). It’s development can be traced as far back as the 1930’s, when higher performance grades of stainless steel were required in the pulp and papermaking industry.

The original specification was described under the UNS S31803 caption. However, the content of chromium and molybdenum — which define resistance to pitting corrosion — was set at the higher end of the specification to form UNS S32205. Over time, that higher-end specification has come to dominate commercial supply.

Langley Alloys carries an extensive stock of duplex stainless steel, up to 16″ (406.4mm) diameter solid bars, plate up to 3″ (76.2mm) thickness plus selected hollow bars, seamless tubes and fittings.
